The CTE is thrilled to welcome Kate Stephenson to our team as a CTE Faculty Fellow. She will focus her efforts on supporting our community-engaged initiatives. Kate shares some of her hopes and plans for the next year.
One of the week’s highlights will be when Randy Stoecker, a renowned sociology professor from the University of Wisconsin, gives a talk, “From the Margins to the Streets: Higher Ed Community Engagement for Justice,” that is being sponsored by UVA’s Center for Teaching Excellence, Equity Center, and Office for Academic Outreach.

In his Virginia Politics and Policy course, Batten Professor Andy Pennock asks his students to choose policy problems facing the Commonwealth that they’d like to see solved. Then, the class works together to both determine relevant readings and invite guests to speak on the issues they’ve selected. Pennock designed the class through UVA’s Center for Teaching Excellence, using a model called "open inquiry."

The Jefferson Trust awarded the Office for Academic Outreach and Center for Teaching Excellence a $130,000 grant to create the infrastructure to support the expansion of community-engaged courses at UVA. Read more on how the funding will be used.
