TPT Requirements 2026 Onward

Program Components

The following lists describe the requirements of each TPT tier, along with time estimates for each requirement and for each tier in its entirety. Note that time estimates for independent work are only rough approximations, as everyone's approach to writing is unique.

Tier 1

Total estimated hours: 26 hours, comprised of 18 hours of programming/teaching and approximately 8 hours of independent work

  • Attend Foundations of College Teaching Seminar (four 90-minute meetings plus a pre-seminar short reading/writing assignment) (6 hours of in-person meetings plus ~2 hours of independent work)
  • Attend Teaching as a Graduate Student (TAGS) (offered each year in August and January) (4 hours)
  • Attend the Reflective Teaching Statement Workshop (90 minutes)

  • Attend at least 4 hours of teaching-related workshops, spread across at least two events (in addition to TAGS, the Reflective Teaching Statement workshop, and the Foundations Seminar). To provide breadth, workshop hours must address at least 3 of the following themes (additional workshops may repeat themes, align with other themes on the list, or be categorized as “other”). Each workshop may have up to two thematic tags; tags are determined by participants. (4 hours)
    • Instructional practices
    • Course design
    • Accessibility and/or Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
    • Inclusive Teaching
    • Instructional Technologies/Technology and Teaching
    • Assessment
    • Theoretical/philosophical perspectives

    • Student belonging and well-being
    • Science of learning principles
  • Complete written reflections for each workshop attended and include them in your Tier 1 portfolio (~ 2 hours)
  • Teach at least 3 hours (3 hours)
  • Write a Tier 1 portfolio review/reflection (~ 1 hour)

Tier 2

Total estimated hours: 42 hours, comprised of 24 hours of programming, and another 18 hours of independent work. This is a high estimate, as the length of independent work, observations, and consultations will vary significantly.

  • Complete Tier 2 goal-setting writing prompt (~30 minutes)
  • Complete c3Design online course design seminar (six 90-minute meetings plus independent completion of online modules) (9 hours of meetings and ~10-12 hours of independent work)
  • Complete course design materials begun in c3Design, including an original syllabus and assignment description; include these materials in your Tier 2 portfolio (time estimate incorporated into c3Design independent work)
  • Attend at least 7 hours of teaching-related workshops, spread across at least 4 events. To provide breadth, workshop hours must address at least 5 of the following themes (additional workshops may repeat themes, align with other themes on the list, or be categorized as “other”). Each workshop may have up to two thematic tags; tags are determined by participants. (7 hours)
