SoTL Facilitated Learning Community Fall 2024: Teaching with AI

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Facilitated Learning Community (FLC) is a reading group that provides instructors with opportunities to develop their knowledge of SoTL research and apply it to their teaching through reading, reflection, and discussion. The Fall 2024 SoTL FLC topic is "Teaching with Artificial Intelligence (AI)." There will be two communities: one for faculty and one for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. No prior experience with SoTL or AI is required.

Some questions we will explore together: 

• What are the implications of AI for teaching and learning in higher education?

• How can AI be integrated into the classroom to enhance student engagement and learning?

• What ethical considerations arise when using AI in educational settings?

• How can instructors ensure that AI tools are used to promote equity and inclusion?

• What are the potential challenges and limitations of using AI in teaching?

To begin answering questions like these, we will read José Antonio Bowen and C. Edward Watson’s Teaching with AI: A Practical Guide to a New Era of Human Learning and explore the SoTL literature on the impact and implementation of AI in educational contexts. Together, we will interpret evidence and discuss how to apply it to ensure all students, regardless of their background and prior experiences, can thrive in higher education.

Meeting Details

Prior to each 60-minute session, participants read a book chapter and a related SoTL journal article of their choice. During our time together, we reflect on what we learn and imagine ways to improve our own teaching based on the research findings.

Our sessions will take place every other week for six sessions, starting the week of September 23 and ending the week of December 2. We will be scheduling the date/time/format (in person/virtual) for the sessions based on the group’s availability and preferences. You will be asked to provide this information in the registration form.
