Biography

Ian Mullins is an Assistant Professor, General Faculty in the Sociology Department and Chair-elect for the General Faculty Council. He is a 2023-24 CTE Faculty Fellow and soon to be a College Fellow for Arts and Sciences (beginning Fall 2024). As a CTE Faculty Fellow, he is helping to support ongoing efforts around advancing equity and inclusion.

Ian is a cultural and political sociologist who researches conservative politics in the United States as it relates to the collective production of knowledge and ignorance. He teaches classes ranging from large-enrollment courses to small seminars on topics like Introductory Sociology, The Sociology of Ignorance, Racism and Democracy, and special topics courses related to political movements in the United States.

Ian earned his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of California San Diego, his M.A. from California State University, Northridge, and his B.A. in Sociology and American Studies from the University of Minnesota. Prior to joining UVA, he taught at Yale University, Gateway Community College (in New Haven), Colby College, and the University of California San Diego.
