Engaging students in supporting teaching and learning in STEM courses

Archived

The UVA Undergraduate Learning Assistant program was an initiative designed to support instructors who wanted to increase student learning and the quality of student engagement in their STEM classrooms. Modeled after a program developed at UC-Boulder, our ULA program was designed to support UVA STEM instructors making extensive use of innovative, evidence-based pedagogies in their courses. The ULAs—undergraduate students who have done well in the class previously—helped facilitate learning activities during instructional time.

This pilot program was funded by a grant from American Association of Universities (AAU) and UVA’s Office of the Provost & Vice President. It was directed through a partnership between the Center for Teaching Excellence and A&S Learning Design & Technology.
