Expectations, Eligibility, and How to Apply
CTE Faculty Fellows work alongside full-time CTE faculty to help support the Center’s core mission of improving teaching and learning at UVA. Fellows devote an average of four hours/week to a range of mutually agreed upon activities, such as:
- conducting instructional consultations with other instructors;
- leading departmental/school workshops, communities of practice, faculty learning communities (FLCs), or book groups;
- developing CTE resources;
- supporting current CTE programming or assessment efforts, or helping develop new initiatives.
The exact nature and emphasis of the work depends on the applicant’s interests and the CTE’s priorities. Training, mentoring, and ongoing support is provided by the CTE.
The CTE is committed to working as a team of educational developers that represents diverse viewpoints, backgrounds, and experiences. We especially seek applicants who have demonstrated contributions to improving accessibility and inclusivity in teaching with the goal of helping all students thrive at UVA. We are currently particularly—but not exclusively—interested in faculty who have interest and expertise in one or multiple of these areas:
- Engaging students as partners in teaching and learning;
- Managing teaching teams in large enrollment courses;
- Co-teaching and cross-disciplinary teaching.
Eligibility
All full-time faculty (tenure-eligible, tenured, and general faculty) are eligible to apply. A two-year gap in service is required for reapplication from former Fellows. The number of Fellows the CTE hires each year varies according to need and available resources.
Qualifications
Applicants must have exceptional interpersonal skills, strong verbal and written communication skills, work well in highly collaborative environments, and have a demonstrated commitment to improving teaching and learning and equitable and inclusive practices. It is beneficial though not required to have attended CDI or c3Design prior to starting the position.
Term
Faculty Fellows serve one-year appointments that can be renewed with mutual agreement for up to two additional years.
Compensation
Fellows will receive $6,200 for working 125 hours, which is approximately an average of 4 hours/week during the academic year. They may choose to receive this compensation in one of three ways:
- as an administrative supplement to their salary, spread across the academic year (taxed)
- as summer salary to be paid during the first summer pay period (taxed)
- as a research fund that must be spent between July 1 and May 15 of their fellowship year (not taxed).
Fellows will also be given the official working title of "CTE Faculty Fellow," which they may use while in the position.
Application Materials
Applicants should submit the following materials by the application deadline through the form linked below.
- Letter of Interest (max. two pages): The letter of interest should briefly describe your interest in serving as a Faculty Fellow, sharing what you hope to gain from the experience and what you hope to contribute to CTE work. While you do not need to have a fully developed project in mind, knowing your areas of interest helps us ensure your ideas align with the CTE's mission and that we have the necessary resources to support you and your work.
- Teaching CV (max. two pages): The abbreviated curriculum vita should highlight the applicant’s teaching activities, including, for example, teaching responsibilities, relevant professional development activities, teaching-related publications and presentations, teaching awards, or teaching-related committee work.
N.B. If selected, we will jointly develop a Memorandum of Understanding between the CTE, Faculty Fellow, and the Fellow’s department chair and academic associate dean. In addition to agreeing to the position details, the chair and dean will attest that working with the CTE in the manner described will positively advance the Fellow’s promotion and/or tenure case. Also, any course release is at the discretion of the Fellow’s department or school and must be negotiated and approved prior to the start of the position.
Selection Process
Applicant materials will be reviewed and informal interviews conducted by a small group of CTE faculty and former Fellows. Final selections will be based on how well applicants match the desired qualifications and the current needs of the CTE and University.
Application Deadline and Process
The application period remains open from April 1 through June 15. Review will commence after the official application period closes.
