Eligibility & Expectations

The Community-Engaged Teaching Scholars program is open to all UVA faculty (tenure-eligible, tenured, and general academic faculty).

Community-Engaged Teaching Scholars are expected to:

• attend a four-day course design institute from May 23-26, 2022. 

• develop and teach one new course or substantially redesign an existing course. Those who thrive in this initiative are interested in equitable, ethically responsible community-engaged teaching and learning that advance the five principles of equity-based community engaged teaching defined by UVA’s Equity Center: Co-production, Responsibility, Equity, Authentic Partnership, and Mutuality.

• fully and actively participate in small, structured learning communities. Since a major goal is promoting a teaching support network and community among faculty, consistent and active participation in the program is crucial. Faculty who can commit to participate fully in all program activities are encouraged to apply.

As a Community-Engaged Teaching Scholar, you can apply for up to $8,000 discretionary funding from the Office of the Vice Provost for Academic Outreach, for related professional development opportunities or for summer salary (in accordance with University policy) to support three iterations of a community-engaged course. Faculty can apply for $4,000 for the development of the course and the first iteration, and faculty may make two further applications for the same course for $2,000 toward the two subsequent iterations.
