Workshop
Toward Universal Design: SDAC and Teaching
This event has been rescheduled from September 8.
This 90-minute session for engineers focuses on the intersection of teaching choices and student accommodations. Together we will unpack features of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and look for connections—and tensions—between common teaching practices and features of UDL. We will also address common misconceptions about student accommodations and reframe course design and working with student advocates as opportunities for more equitable teaching and learning.
Session Objectives
As a result of this session, participants will be able to:
Relate teaching choices to UDL principles, and imagine more accessible modifications to common teaching practices.
See student accommodations and course design as opportunities for more equitable teaching.
Develop an awareness of SDAC and other accessibility resources at UVA.
Facilitated by Courtney MacMasters, Accessibility Specialist, SDAC, and Lynn Mandeltort, Assistant Director of Engineering Education Initiatives, CTE
