Todd Zakrajsek at UVA
Join celebrated author and educator Todd Zakrajsek to explore inclusive, research-based instructional strategies and their impact on student learning and instructor well-being. The schedule of events is as follows:
9:30-10:45 am - Keynote: Including the Ones Too Often Left Behind
Some individuals don’t test well, even though they have great comprehension of material. There are students who do not participate in class discussions even though they are thoroughly prepared and have something to say. In this session, we will look at reframing some common academic challenges for those students who struggle in ways we as faculty don’t often realize. This session is not all about pointing a finger at the multitude of challenges students face, but rather identifying strategies to help those who may have slightly different ways to best learn.
1:30-2:45 pm - Workshop: Lecturing AND Active Learning: finding a balance
The research on lecturing is frequently misunderstood. The actual findings are not a comparison between active learning and lecturing, but rather between lecturing alone and lecturing integrated with active learning. While this distinction may seem subtle, it's actually quite significant. Lectures, when combined with active learning and delivered effectively, can be highly impactful.
3:00-4:00 pm - Graduate Student Discussion on Student Engagement
Graduate students face unique challenges and opportunities in the classroom, whether serving as TAs or as instructors of record. Join this discussion of strategies to engage students and support student learning. In addition to practice in engagement strategies, this session will include ample time for Q&A.
