Workshop

Session 2: Teaching in Turbulent Times

In times of global conflict, domestic strife, and local or personal crises, it can be challenging to decide when and how to address the impact of such events inside the classroom. This session offers instructors an opportunity to reflect on how a range of factors, including their identities, emotional capacity, skill, comfort level, size and nature of their classes, and their relationship to their students affect possible responses. Through guidance from facilitators and conversation with fellow educators, participants will develop a clearer vision and practical strategies for how to navigate the challenges of teaching in turbulent times.

Presenters: Michael Palmer, CTE Barbara Fried Director; Lynn Mandeltort, CTE Assistant Director of Engineering Education Initiatives

Note: Open to both faculty and graduate students, the session focuses on helping instructors teaching in diverse disciplines and settings respond inside the classroom to moments of crisis. It will be less applicable to instructors who teach courses centered on topics related to specific crises. The CTE is actively working to develop more appropriate programming for these groups of instructors.
