Workshop
Reducing Teaching Overwhelm and Increasing Teaching Joy
Join us for this workshop with Chavella T. Pittman, as part of our CTE Speaker Series.
In my research, workshop and consulting work, faculty are sharing that they feel like teaching is relentlessly grinding them into the ground. There is no reason to suffer in silence from teaching overwhelm. It is absolutely possible, desirable and okay to provide excellent teaching *and* also care about and for yourself (i.e. wellness).
Faculty should bring their teaching materials to this hands-on workshop. In it, we’ll examine ways faculty can reduce teaching overwhelm so there is “space” for restoration. We’ll also examine ways to insert teaching joy into some (not all) of the space we’ve newly freed in our teaching. At the end of this workshop, participants will have ideas on how they can teach well while still having time/energy/focus for the other important things in their life.
Earlier in the day, Chavella will offer the seminar Teaching Overwhelm: Why It Matters and What Can Be Done About It.

Chavella T. Pittman, PhD is a Professor of Sociology and the Founder of Effective & Efficient Faculty, a faculty development company that provides faculty success services. She has a love/hate relationship with running, is a beer aficionado, has a cured black thumb, loves to learn, and believes joy is non-negotiable. Her forthcoming book Empowered is a guide to help women faculty of color (& faculty in general) teach excellently and thrive. Her expertise includes methods & statistics, higher education, and interpersonal interactions and can be found in peer-reviewed journals, scholarly books, and broader publications (e.g. The Chronicle of Higher Education, Inside Higher Ed).
