Workshop

Navigating the Brave New World of Generative AI in Higher Education

Curious about generative artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT? Want to learn more about the ways in which they will likely disrupt traditional models of teaching and learning? Not sure how you might respond to this disruption?

In this 90-minute workshop, Batten Associate Professor of Public Policy Andrew Pennock and Center for Teaching Excellence Director and Professor Michael Palmer will introduce you to some of the capabilities of AI tools and their potential impact on teaching and learning in higher education. We will explore how generative AI is currently being discussed in higher education circles and consider the pedagogical implications of these tools. You will have the opportunity to generate ideas for how AI tools can be leveraged for pedagogical benefit.*

This session will be recorded and the recording will be shared with registered participants.

*The title and description for this session were developed in conversation with ChatGPT. The draft took about 3 minutes to construct and represents about 80% of the final version. The prompts were as follows:

  • Write a description for a 90-minute workshop on how generative AI will impact teaching and learning in higher education.

  • Focus more on the awareness of the capabilities of AI tools, disruption to teaching and learning, and possible pedagogical solutions.

  • Revise by leaving out the part about how the tools work.

  • Also leave out the future impacts and ethical considerations.

  • Shorten a little.

  • Add a catchy hook as the first sentence.

  • Make these hooks more about curiosity.

  • Take a less optimistic tone.
