Workshop

Hoos Learn Together

In large-enrollment courses, cultivating a sense of belonging can often fall by the wayside, but research shows that it's fundamental to student engagement and success. In this workshop, we will help you develop tailored strategies to overcome obstacles to belonging in your large courses. Through a series of activities, we will help you identify factors that impede belonging in your class; brainstorm strategies to increase belonging; and make concrete changes to your syllabus, assignments, and/or class sessions. You will leave with strategies to create a welcoming and interactive educational context where every student feels valued.

Your guide for the workshop will be Peter Johannessen, CTE Faculty Fellow and Assistant Professor of Public Policy in the Batten School. Over the past two years, Peter has interviewed faculty and students at UVA to explore their understanding of sense of belonging in courses. He received UVA’s 2023 All-University Teaching Award.

Lunch will be provided.
