Generative AI Facilitated Learning Community Spring 2024

The Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) Faculty Learning Community (FLC) is a group that helps instructors develop a better understanding of GenAI tools in course administration, assignments for students, and/or developing course policies. Our goal is to bring together instructors from different disciplinary backgrounds and GenAI experiences, ranging from gaining a better general knowledge of the technology or developing specific tools for their courses.

Some questions we will explore together:

  • How are students and faculty currently using GenAI in their courses?

  • How can I create course-specific GenAI tutors? How good are they?

  • How can GenAI be effectively incorporated into course assignments?

  • How can GenAI function as a feedback partner in designing course materials, such as syllabi, active learning activities, assignments, etc.?

The FLC will address these questions by reviewing methods of how GenAI has been incorporated into courses in different disciplines, developing ideas and/or building tools that would be useful for our courses, generating course policies for productive use of GenAI by your students, and obtaining valuable feedback from a community of fellow instructors. There will also be opportunities to receive feedback from UVA students on ideas or materials you generate during the FLC.

Meeting Details

Before each meeting, participants will read an article or design a series of prompts related to a project they wish to further for their course(s). During our time together, we will discuss ideas and outcomes, sharing what we have found most useful. We will also explore ways to design course policies that clearly frame how students should engage with GenAI productively and with approval.

Each meeting will be 60 minutes and take place every other week for six sessions, starting the week of February 12 and ending the week of April 22. We will be scheduling the date/time for the sessions based on the group’s availability and preferences. You will be asked to provide this information in the registration form.
