Community-Based Teaching and Scholarship
Scholarship for Community Impact: So You Want to Present at an Engaged Scholarship Conference?
This learning community is a place where faculty and professionals can explore a range of topics, challenges, and opportunities that arise within the world of community-based teaching and scholarship.
In this setting, we use “community-based” as shorthand descriptor for practices such as community-engaged teaching, service-learning, community-engaged research, social action teaching, and more. What these practices all have in common is that they bring students, faculty, and community partners together in pursuit of community-defined, mutually beneficial goals.
In practice this may look like:
- A social action course that challenges students to identify and work to change policy
- A service-learning course that combines classroom and experiential learning through student volunteering and reflection
- Researchers partnered with community organizations to collaboratively develop research questions and define goals
- A community-engaged course in which significant portions of the syllabus are co-planned, or even co-taught, with community partners
In October 2025, the nationally recognized Engagement Scholarship Consortium will host its annual meeting in Roanoke, Virginia. The theme is Bridging Resources to Build Stronger Communities. What would it take for UVA to show up in a big way? During this session, we will talk about what it might take for you personally to present. Whether or not this is a near-term priority for you, consider attending to strengthen your knowledge of such opportunities.
Before you attend the session, consider the following questions below. We will discuss in person. Lunch will be provided.
Questions for Individual Reflection
- Relevance and Interest:
- How might your current teaching, research, or service align with the themes of the conference?
- Are there aspects of your work that could contribute to the broader conversation about social justice and scholarship?
- Personal Goals:
- What would you hope to achieve by presenting at ESC 2025 or future conferences?
- How might participating in this process help you refine your work or advance your professional goals?
Questions for Group Discussion
- Opportunities for Collaboration:
- Are there opportunities for interdisciplinary or collaborative proposals among colleagues or students?
- How might the FLC (Faculty Learning Community) sessions help us refine ideas and prepare strong submissions?
- Support and Resources:
- What support or resources would be helpful for developing and submitting a proposal?
- How can we, as a group, ensure everyone feels confident and prepared to participate if they choose?
- Exploring the Conference's Potential Impact:
- How can we maximize the benefits of having this conference nearby for our professional development and UVA’s visibility?
- What could participation in this conference mean for our collective work in promoting justice, equity, and inclusion within the University and beyond?
