Collaborative Teaching Meetups

Teaching alongside a colleague can be an intellectually fulfilling and joyful addition to our work as instructors, but what does it take to share teaching responsibilities? Collaborative Teaching Meetups are gatherings of instructors who teach with another instructor, who are interested in learning how to teach with another instructor, or who are interested in sharing their collaborative teaching experience.

We will explore the whys and hows and hangups of collaborative teaching through discussion, panels, and light reading. Topics will include, but aren’t limited to, developing a shared teaching philosophy, surfacing power dynamics, student perceptions of co-instruction, and learning from the practical experiences of long-term co-instructors. Our time together will be shaped by participants’ interests, and we will foreground the UVA context.

Future meetings will be determined by the group’s availability. If you are interested but unable to attend the first meeting, please email Lynn Mandeltort at lam9fg@virginia.edu to stay in the loop.

N.B. What do we mean by collaborative teaching? Collaborative teaching involves an appreciable degree of shared responsibility for all aspects of instruction within a single course, typically within the same section(s) – i.e., students can expect to see either or both instructors throughout the semester. If you teach in a “coordinated” course of many sections, you are welcome to attend and explore possibilities for collaboration in those arrangements.
