Workshop

Building Community In and Through Large Enrollment Classes

What does it take to help students feel like more than a number in a large course? What are the intersections of structure and flexibility that support students’ learning and belonging when an instructor's attentional and temporal resources are limited?

This 90-minute workshop will focus on helping instructors take stock of their choices in large enrollment courses, including: to contribute to a community of similarly positioned instructors and develop a habit of sharing practices; leverage multiple sources of relationship-oriented practices to support students’ learning and experience in large enrollment courses; and balance holistic and pragmatic thinking to improve student experience in large enrollment courses.

NB: For the purposes of this workshop, the presenters consider “large enrollment” to be any class size such that it is difficult or impossible to engage with every student one on one, which in our experience is about 40+ students; your own definition may be different.
