Brilliant, Resilient Learning

One of the oft-reported joys of teaching is seeing students’ brilliance. Whether as an individual or a group, student brilliance illuminates our teaching. Simultaneously, despite our intentions and efforts, we may fall short of bringing out the best in each of our students.

When we teach, we unwittingly and constantly call upon students’ resilience; we ask them to try, to make mistakes, to approach desirable difficulties, to accept and act upon feedback, and to persevere especially when things are going poorly. All the while that resilience is subject to other pulls, the myriad demands on students’ psychology and physicality that comprise their multidimensional lives beyond our classrooms. We also have occasion to have our collective resilience tested.

In crises and when the non-classroom aspects of teaching suddenly and tragically dominate our educational ecosystem, can classrooms and communities contribute to students’ resilience? How does or can their brilliance shine through during dark times? The Innovations in Pedagogy Summit aims to capture that light through this year’s theme: Brilliant, Resilient Learning.

Our keynote speaker is Dr. Mays Imad, who will introduce us to three factors that can promote resilience so we can continue to engage, learn, lead, and thrive. Her presentation is titled Harnessing the Resilience Within: The Science of Biological and Behavioral Resilience through Plasticity, Sociality, and Meaning.

Following her presentation, the day will consist of two sets of concurrent sessions with lunch in between, and finish with a showcase from our Community-Engaged Teaching Scholars. View the tentative schedule.

The 2023 Summit will be an in-person event. The Summit team and advisory committee aspire to create an increasingly accessible event, and we continue to learn about tools and approaches to improve the Summit experience for all would-be presenters and attendees. We invite your feedback at cte-summit@virginia.edu.
