Creating Interactive Learning Guides for Students

Wendy Martin | Mathematics Instructor, UVA's College at Wise

In UVA Wise Mathematics Instructor Wendy Martin's courses, she often finds that students have a hard time with notetaking; they get caught up in writing and not listening to the discussion. Since UVA Wise faculty and students are provided an iPad, she decided to make use of the Numbers app to create interactive learning guides (see example attached below) for students and plans to continue doing this in future courses. Within the notes, she uses bright colors, various fonts, different media, and other elements to emphasize certain things. She says completion of these notes is a group effort and they help students be more focused in class. Martin's main takeaway is that using interactive notes enables her to make better use of class meetings and discussions.
