Biography

Dr. C.L. Bohannon is the Associate Dean for Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion and Associate Professor in Landscape Architecture in the School of Architecture. In his role as a CTE Faculty Fellow, he supports CTE and the Office of Academic Outreach in community engagement and service learning (CESL) initiatives. He provides workshops and convenes a monthly learning community dedicated to CESL and consults individually with instructors interested in community-engaged teaching.

Dr. Bohannon’s research focuses on the relationship between community engagement and design education, primarily through design for social and environmental justice. Dr. Bohannon works in the landscape context of community history and identity, social/environmental (in)justice, and community learning. His research has contributed to the theorization and application of community engagement in design education. Dr. Bohannon teaches courses on community-engaged design research, design research methods, and seeing, understanding & representing landscapes. Dr. Bohannon served as the President of the Virginia Chapter of ASLA in 2019 and was elevated to ASLA Fellow in 2023.

C.L. earned his Ph.D. in Architecture and Design Research and Master of Landscape Architecture from Virginia Tech and his Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.
